History of Weber Barbecues

Weber-Stephen, the company behind Weber barbecues, has existed in some form since the late 1800s, but it wasn’t until after WWII when suburbs started springing up that Weber barbecues as we know it today came onto the scene.

When families first began entertaining outdoors in their new suburban oases, free-standing metal braziers were the most popular type of “barbecue”—they could reach higher temperatures faster than traditional barbecue pits, but rain and wind could quickly cast a wet and ashy shadow over a cookout.

After yet another washed out backyard party, George Stephen Sr., an employee at Weber Brothers Metalworks in Palatine, IL, had a bright idea. He chopped a metal buoy in half, added air vents and legs, and thus invented the original kettle BBQ.

George started selling his invention, affectionately known in the early days as a “spaceship grill”, and by the end of the 1950s, he was able to purchase Weber Brothers Metalworks. He changed the name to Weber-Stephen Products, and after decades spent growing the business and developing innovative new grill tools and features, Weber is now one of the top grill brands in the world.

What Makes Weber Grills So Good?

With a higher price point than many other grill brands, you may be wondering what makes Weber grills so good—and are they worth the extra money?

The short answer is yes—Weber barbecues are worth the extra upfront cost. Here’s why: Weber grills stand apart from their competitors in a number of areas, including materials, performance, repairs, and support.

Materials

Many budget grills are manufactured using lower quality materials that are more likely to rust or otherwise degrade much faster, sometimes rendering your grill unusable after just 1 or 2 years. Weber barbecues, on the other hand, are built using porcelain-coated enamel or stainless steel, cast iron, and other high-quality materials, and use welds instead of fasteners to create more durable, rustproof seams. Each model is also tested to simulate 10-15 years of use, so as long as they’re properly cleaned and maintained, a Weber barbecue should last 10 years or more. A $500 grill that lasts 10 years will cost far less per year than a $200 grill that only lasts two.

Performance

It can be more difficult to control and maintain temperatures on budget grills in part due to lower quality materials and weaker overall engineering, leading to more flare-ups and overall worse performance.

Repairs

Replacement parts for Weber barbecues are readily available, and in most cases, are simple to install with easy-to-follow step by step directions.

Support

Most Weber barbecues come with a 10-year warranty to ensure you can get the support and assistance you need through the entire life of your grill.

Replacement Parts for Weber Grills

Weber grills are built to last for years, but you may still need to replace parts every so often to extend the lifespan of your Weber barbecue.

Regardless of brand or manufacturing quality, some grill parts are just more susceptible to damage than others, which they’re more likely to require replacement. Burners, heat plates, cooking grates, and igniters are the most commonly replaced grill parts.

Before you purchase any replacement parts, be sure to check your grill’s model number and ensure you are selecting the right part for your grill.

To determine your Weber barbecue’s model number, start by finding the serial number. On a Weber grill, your serial number will consist of 2 letters and 7 numbers. For gas and wood pellet Weber grills, your serial number will be located on the data label. For charcoal grills, the serial number will be stamped on the damper.
